7 Things To Know About Breeding Boston Terriers

Filed Under Pets | Posted on January 24, 2008

So you find yourself excited about breeding your Boston
Terrier. You want a quick checklist of what you need to do
and things you should be aware of.

I will tell you about seven important factors you should
consider when you decide to bring in more Boston Terrier
puppies into this world.

You may not like what I am about to say, but here goes. In
short, do not do it! Why do I say that? There are a few
reasons.

First, you need to take a look at the big picture. With so
many abandoned dogs, if you want more I recommend going to
a rescue center instead. It is better to provide a home for
these precious little mutts that have no home than to bring
in new ones.

Secondly, with so many amateurs breeding, more and more
Boston Terriers are being put to sleep as soon as they are
brought into the pound.

However, if you still want to go ahead with breeding Boston
Terriers, then read and absorb the following:

Do not think of breeding before your dog is at least two
years old. They need to be physically and mentally tough
enough to cope with giving birth.

Ideally you want her to win shows, thereby ascertaining
that she meets the all important breed standards.

The next is an absolute must, before you even contemplate
breeding. You need to make sure your dog gets certified for
genetic testing and hips thereby eliminating the
possibilities of carrying any hereditary problems.

What you do not want to do is trial and error when breeding
your Boston Terrier. Get yourself a mentor. Find someone you
know who already breeds them successfully and learn every
step of the way.

Next, I hope your pockets are lined with the green stuff!
You need to keep aside a fair amount of money for any
emergency vet care that maybe required. You also should be
aware that your dog could die as a result of giving birth.

Following the last point, you need to be prepared to bottle
feed the entire litter should the mother pass away. This IS
hard work.

And last but not least, you should have homes prepared for
all the new additions before any breeding is done. A
responsible breeder does not let their puppies end up in
shelters.

What I have provided you above is just a few of the factors
you need to be aware of and do. Far too often owners that
love their Boston Terriers, get excited about having more
from the same. My advice would be to keep that excitement in
check till you thoroughly research breeding Boston Terriers,
and are very aware of the amount of hard work that lays
ahead of you.

My strong advice would be to give a loving home for the
hundreds of dogs that are currently in rescue centres
instead of going down the tough and expensive part of
breeding. But if you choose to breed, do so responsibly.
