Abscess From Pet Bite

Filed Under Pets | Posted on March 1, 2008

A localized accumulation of pus, usually caused by an infection introduced from an animal bite or other penetrating wound. An abscess typically appears 2-4days after the initial wound. It may appear as a painful swelling or, if it has ruptured, as a draining wound. Abscesses are quite often associated with a high fever, lethargy, poor appetite and dehydration.

Abscesses occur in all animals and are most common in cats. This may in part be due to the type of bacteria that reside in a cats mouth and is very likely related to the the sharp small teeth and the way cats bite. Cats tend to bite directly into the victim without any pulling or tearing motion as is common in dog bites. This allows contamination to be deposited beneath the skin of the victim and the small puncture wound closes over sealing in the germs. Non-neuter male cats are the most likely to suffer from abscess due to their territorial disputes. Neutering your cat will reduce the fighting and therefore reduce the likelihood of an abscess.

How to take care of an abscess:

If it has ruptured, clean the wound with soap (not detergent) and water. Rinse well and pat dry. Repeat several times a day. - If there is swelling, apply warm, moist compresses for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat 3 or 4 times daily. - Abscesses should be examined by a veterinarian within 24 hours.

Do not attempt to open the abscess yourself. - Do not apply medicines, potions, or home remedies unless directed to by a veterinarian.

Your veterinarian will likely prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. Often lancing, flushing or surgical debridement is indicated. Small flexible latex drain tubes may be sutured in place to allow the abscess to drain for a few days.
