Understanding Your Dog

Understanding Your Dog and providing the appropriate care is an important mindset approach that you should always have for the entire duration of your dog’s life span.
A puppy is one of the most appealing creatures on the earth and everyone had, at some point in their life, desired to own a puppy. A puppy is not a fad. You have to consider carefully on the cost of dog ownership and whether a dog can fit into your lifestyle.
Many people have different reasons and unrealistic expectation when they make the decision to own a dog. Dogs are not substitute human beings. Relationship among humans is a 2 way thing and it is the same between a dog and its owner.
As owners, the onus is on us to Understand our Dog. Dogs need companionship with clearly defined pack hierarchy and a stable and a secure and environment.
An example would be the relations between my dog booger and myself. My dog booger is a toy fox terrier and is clearly a pack animal. Many times booger tends to consider me as his equal or maybe a little better. My dad is head of the household. Booger sees and follows the relationship between my dad and myself. As a pack animal, he has come to the conclusion that my dad is his general and I only am his mere lieutenant.
Dogs can get very confused when there is different expectation of it from different members of the family. At times it is expected to behave as a human child and at times like a responsible human. It is expected to stay out of the way and is fitted into family life when time allows. This may be seen as perceived behaviour problem in dogs. And so you have a situation of unhappy dogs and owners. Sad but is true, some less enthusiastic owners have come to the conclusion that their dog is neurologically abnormal. The dogs are then put to death or dumped in to animal shelters.
I went to SPCA the other day to help out with the dogs there. I saw these posters which highlights the differences between Dogs and their Owners
By Human Owner :
Wanted : Friendly, cute, cuddly canine to share family life with two adults (aged 35 and 42 years) and four children between three and ten years old . Must be house trained, must not dig, bark, jump up or chew household items . Must be prepared to be squeezed, poked, dressed up and dragged around by wild and active children. Must be happy with one walk daily, if time permits.
By Dog :
Wanted : Dependable, small human ‘pack’. Must work together to defend territory and should avoid independent wanderings. Must enjoy daily investigation of the home, and respect the need to mark territory (small teeny weeny urine stain). Den should be warm and dry with a soft sleeping area and should be situated near plentiful food supply. Ground should easy to dig for bone-burying purposes. Younger ‘pack’ members should be well disciplined.
Remember the saying “Dog is Man’s Best Friend”. You can be the most miserable person in the world whom everyone hates but you still the best in your dog’s esteem. So think carefully before you decide to purchase the adorable looking puppy at the showroom.
